At Unique Group, our values of committed and conscious drive our belief in the power of collective action to make a positive impact on our environment. As part of our ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, we recently participated in a Mangrove Afforestation initiative along with Goumbook at the Zorah Mangroves in Ajman.

We navigated through the winding waterways of the mangrove forest on kayaks, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of nature. The Zorah Mangroves felt like a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the city streets, offering a sanctuary for both wildlife and humans alike.

Our team was privileged to learn firsthand from our knowledgeable guides about the vital role mangroves play in combatting climate change. These remarkable trees are environmental superheroes, capable of capturing vast amounts of carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Through a process known as carbon sequestration, mangroves store this carbon in their biomass and the soil beneath them, helping to combat global warming and reduce our carbon footprint.

Unique Group's team participating in mangrove afforestation initiative

The benefits of mangroves extend far beyond carbon sequestration. These resilient trees also serve as natural buffers against coastal erosion and storm surges, protect shorelines from wave action, and provide vital habitats for a diverse array of plant and animal species. Furthermore, mangroves act as natural filters, purifying the water around them and improving water quality for both marine life and coastal communities. This was evident as we saw a wide range of crabs, flamingos, seagulls and other fauna in the area.

Martin Charles, Chief Operating Officer at Unique Group, joined the initiative and commented: “Our participation in the mangrove planting is a reflection of Unique Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility. It’s not just about planting trees, it’s about taking action to combat climate change and protect the vital ecosystems that sustain us.

Unique Group COO planting mangrove sapling as part of sustainability efforts

The tree saplings all of us at Unique Group have planted are part of the United Nations Trillion Tree Campaign along with the National Sequestration Program by the UAE Ministry of Climate Change & Environment. It is estimated that in the life span of the mangroves we have planted, it will sequester 8,008 kg of carbon.

Our experience at the Zorah Mangroves was not only a rewarding team activity but also a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world. By participating in initiatives like mangrove afforestation, we are not only contributing to the conservation of our environment but also fostering a deeper connection to the ecosystems that sustain us.

Through collective action and community engagement, we can ensure that these vital ecosystems thrive for generations to come.

Unique Group, global innovators in subsea technologies and engineering, recently announced the launch of two unmanned surface vessels (USVs), the Uni-Mini and Uni-Max. The USV systems have been developed entirely in-house, designed for surveying operations and engineered to meet diverse operational needs across challenging environments. Wind Systems recently had the opportunity to talk with Unique Group’s Global Head of Unmanned Surface Vessels, Jack Dougherty, on what these USVs could mean for the offshore wind industry and beyond. This interview was published in the February edition of the Wind Systems Magazine.

What is the purpose of these two new USVs?

The introduction of the Uni-Mini and Uni-Max serves a strategic purpose within our Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV) portfolio, complementing the existing Uni-Pact — a three-meter USV renowned for its autonomy, versatility, and payload capacity. While the Uni-Pact excels in various applications, including its eight-hour endurance, we recognized an emerging market niche for more compact and easily manageable solutions.

The Uni-Mini, constructed from lightweight carbon fiber, addresses this need. This smaller, two-man lift USV is designed to be transportable in the back of a pickup truck, making it an ideal solution for infrequent users or scenarios where a full-scale industrial USV may be impractical. Responding to customer requests for dual payloads and extended endurance, the Uni-Mini stands as a versatile tool. It’s for customers who don’t consistently need a full industrial strength, industrial size surface vessel USV.

For example, let’s say you are in New Orleans or you’re down on the Gulf Coast and a hurricane comes in. You have a small marina or anchorage there, and you need to make sure that it’s clear before you allow other vessels to transit in and out. To help in this situation, you can deploy the Uni-Mini, and it can perform a quick multi-beam survey and based on the results, you will be good to go to bring the boats in before the hurricane.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Uni-Max emerges as a substantial addition to our fleet. Boasting a 5-meter by 2.2-meter frame, the Uni-Max provides a more robust platform capable of handling dual payloads. Its hybrid powertrain, incorporating a generator for extended range, facilitates an impressive endurance exceeding 96 hours. This larger and more powerful USV is positioned as a dependable solution for comprehensive and prolonged missions, demonstrating a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our clientele across a spectrum of industrial and environmental applications.

Uni-Mini and Uni-Max USVs
From Left to Right: Uni-Mini USV and Uni-Max USV

Was that part of why you found it necessary to develop these new USVs, the size differentials mainly, or was something else involved as well?

We developed these new USVs after identifying a market niche, hence we provide our clients with options suitable for their diverse applications as well as project budgets. At Unique Group, we formulate a price point where clients can either rent or buy the solution they need.

When it comes to the Uni-Mini, it’s a very low barrier to entry even with its carbon-fiber body, it’s a relatively inexpensive platform for the capability it possesses. Then there’s a general step-up to the larger Uni-Pact and then all the way out to the Uni-Max.

What makes the USVs unique?

USVs are cost-efficient, robust, and reliable platforms that can operate in multiple environments from shallow water to offshore. With Uni-Fleet, we try to keep it down cost-wise, not just in the platform itself but also in the cost of training. The three vessels utilize a common autopilot system. If you’re proficient in operating the Uni-Mini effectively, you can also operate the Uni-Max.

The payload operations function independently and are not integrated into the overall system, making it straightforward for operations.

How can the USVs be used in the development of offshore wind?

Our Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) play a pivotal role across various stages, contributing to the efficiency and sustainability of wind farm projects. Commencing from the initial phases of pre-construction, these USVs are instrumental in conducting site surveys and mapping exercises. This ensures meticulous assessment of the seabed’s capacity to support the prolonged weight and operational demands of wind turbines over decades.

Beyond site assessment, USVs are adept at environmental monitoring, offering a versatile platform equipped with specialized sensors. This capability extends to maintenance and inspection tasks, as well as providing security and surveillance for the wind farm.

Remarkably, a single USV can seamlessly transition between these diverse roles, from ensuring the security of the site to employing sensors for environmental monitoring and utilizing cameras for visual inspections of turbine components.

For larger USVs, their utility extends further to the transportation of materials and personnel essential for offshore platforms. These autonomous vessels are adept at efficiently ferrying personnel and required materials to and from the platforms, thereby facilitating the smooth functioning and sustenance of wind farms. This comprehensive range of functionalities underscores the adaptability and effectiveness of USVs in addressing the multifaceted needs of the offshore wind industry, contributing significantly to the overall success of wind energy projects.

Why the need for the two separate classifications?

The differentiation between the Uni-Mini and Uni-Pact classifications is driven by distinct operational requirements. The Uni-Mini, with its compact 1.6-meter size, excels in navigating tight spaces and shallow waters, providing an excellent solution for tasks such as dredging and shoreline assessments. Its role extends to leading manned vessels in reconnaissance during storms, ensuring safe navigation. In contrast, the larger Uni-Pact, with enhanced payload capacity, addresses comprehensive survey and operational needs. This strategic classification allows us to offer specialized solutions tailored to specific tasks and environments.

Uni-Max, Uni-Pact and Uni-Mini USVs
Unique Group’s fleet of USVs – (From L-R) Uni-Max, Uni-Pact and Uni-Mini.

What’s been the market response so far?

The market response to our recent developments has been highly positive. We already had an established name in the USV market because Unique Group doesn’t just sell, but we also rent. It’s quite a big market for us in the energy sector. We have already been successful with the Uni-Pact, and now we are providing two more solutions to problems that customers genuinely have. The decision to offer both a smaller and a larger USV was a strategic response to specific customer demands of wanting higher endurance and enhanced functionality. To do that, we need a bigger and more stable platform. We topped it with the functionality to run two different payloads, be a sub-bottom profiler, and a multi-beam.

Do you see these USVs having a more active role in offshore wind energy production as the sector ramps up?

There’s quite a parallel between the green-energy movement for renewables and green USVs. When you’re getting into the renewable market space, obviously you have a desire to deviate away from the internal combustion engine and bring another option to the market — whether it’s something that’s not coal, not nuclear, you want to do something new, and that’s where wind energy comes in. USVs follow the same path: Most of them, especially the smaller ones, are electrically powered. They’re battery powered and rechargeable. Even the larger ones have a hybrid powertrain, where in fact, a small generator runs and recharges the batteries, allowing it to maintain its endurance and keep going. This reduces reliance on a big diesel or petrol-powered internal combustion engine.

Uni-USV Fleet - A sustainable choice
Uni-USV Fleet is a sustainable choice among customers for its features and positive impact on the environment.

Anything else you’d like to mention that we didn’t talk about?

In addition to our USVs, we offer comprehensive solutions that extend beyond the vessels themselves. For communication needs, our USVs utilize 4G wireless technology. However, recognizing potential challenges in remote locations, we offer Uni-Mesh — a mesh radio network ensuring secure communications during surveys.

To further facilitate our clients, we provide a deployment case containing first-line consumable spares, regardless of whether it’s a rental or a purchase. This Pelican case includes the controller, necessary documentation (checklists, training materials), and essential spare parts, ensuring seamless operations. Our commitment is to offer an all-encompassing solution, making it easy for clients to use our vessels while providing the necessary components to keep them running efficiently.

In Commercial Diving, safety is non-negotiable. Recently, Unique Group conducted a thorough audit and service of a competitor’s air diving system, highlighting the vital importance of prioritising quality over cost when it comes to diving equipment. We take a closer look at what we found and why it matters for the safety of everyone involved in Commercial Diving operations.

Pressure Vessel Manufacturing and Testing

Our audit uncovered some issues in the pressure vessel manufacturing and testing process.

  • Lack of weld fusion and undercuts in certain areas were found.
  • The report on the pressure vessel’s hydrostatic test did not mention if the medical lock was included as part of the test.
  • Critical PVHO documents including post hydro testing NDT were missing from the chamber manufacturing data book.

The lack of these documents emphasizes the need for robust manufacturing quality plans and thorough testing, ensuring that every detail is accounted for to meet the required standards.

Dive Control Communication Units & Relief Valves

It was noted the communication units in the dive control system were not suitable. They were portable units, removed from transit cases and mounted in a way that exposed their electronic parts to harsh marine conditions.

This could lead to corrosion and equipment failure, underlining the importance of choosing the correct OEM equipment that can withstand the marine environment. Certain relief valves on the control panel were fitted after the gauge, in the event of an over pressurisation the gauges could be damaged or fail.

Incorrect panel-mounted diver communication set
The diver communication set is incorrectly selected for panel-mounted application, connections are exposed.

Machinery Van Safety Measures

In the machinery van, there were no circuit breakers for high-pressure and low-pressure compressors, with only isolation switches fitted.

Container Modifications and Material Selection

Areas, where modifications were made to containers, lacked the correct painting process, resulting in the development of rust where modifications had taken place. In the marine environment, where rust is common, following the right procedures for surface protection is vital.

Surface rust from poor preparation & material choice
Surface rust due to poor preparation and material selection

Additionally, the materials used in certain parts of the launch and recovery system were not suitable for the harsh marine conditions. This highlights the need for choosing materials and paint specifications that can withstand marine environments.

Formation of Surface Rust
Surface rust due to poor preparation and material selection

Launch and Recovery System Design

The design of the emergency braking system in the launch and recovery setup raised safety concerns. It’s manually activated, meaning if the main brake fails, the operator could be placed in the line of fire. The positioning of control boxes makes it difficult for the winch operator to see the hydraulic system status.

Wire catcher
Wire catcher was not fitted as shown above
Hydraulic fittings without Denso tape
Hydraulic fittings were not covered in Denso tape

Adding to that, there’s no emergency changeover valve on the hydraulic power system, and some hydraulic piping isn’t properly protected using Denso Tape or similar method of protection. It was also noted that the A-frame structure was not fitted with a wire catcher which safeguards the uncontrolled descent of the basket in the event of a sheave wheel failure.

Uncovered hydraulic fittings
Hydraulic fittings with no protection

Conclusion

In conclusion, our recent audit reinforces the need to prioritize quality over cost when it comes to diving equipment. While saving money may be tempting, compromising on the quality of gear can lead to serious safety issues and operational downtime. “In my opinion, what sets UG apart from others in the industry is its commitment to fostering a culture of care, appreciation, and recognition for all stakeholders, particularly its employees, and this distinctive aspect remains consistently upheld throughout its history. “

What motivated you to join the company, and what has kept you here for so many years?
Being a fresh CA graduate and looking for a promising start for my career back then, I desired a company that was growth-oriented, where I could contribute while advancing professionally. Unique Group precisely provided me with that opportunity. Joining as a Junior Accountant in 2006, the company was mainly UAE-focused, with fewer than 100 employees. However, today, we have evolved into a truly global company with over 600 employees worldwide.

What is the most memorable achievement or project you’ve been a part of during your time with the company?
What stands out as the most memorable accomplishment or project during my time with UG is a challenging question, given the numerous notable achievements. However, there are two that hold particular significance for me. Firstly, the acquisition of Hydra in South Africa stands out, as it significantly strengthened our Diving Manufacturing capabilities and opened new opportunities in the commercial diving industry, especially for Saturation Dive Systems. The proof of its impact is evident in the Group securing its largest contract in India, attributed to our exceptional diving manufacturing capabilities. Secondly, securing a strategic investment from Bluewater Energy Fund (PE Fund) was a key milestone. I played a substantial role in the due diligence process for both instances, and these experiences have added immense value to the Group.

Can you share some significant milestones or events that have shaped the company’s growth during your time here?
I consider the two events highlighted in the previous answer, namely, the acquisition of Hydra and the strategic investment from Bluewater Energy Fund (PE Fund), to be the most significant milestones that have played a crucial role in shaping the company’s growth during my time.

What do you believe are the key factors that have contributed to the company’s longevity and success?
A key factor is a culture that emphasizes care, appreciation, and recognition for all stakeholders, with a special focus on employees and their valuable contributions to the organization.

In your opinion, what sets this company apart from others in the industry?
In my opinion, what sets UG apart from others in the industry is its commitment to fostering a culture of care, appreciation, and recognition for all stakeholders, particularly its employees, and this distinctive aspect remains consistently upheld throughout its history. The credit goes to the exceptional leadership provided by Harry and Vipul Gandhi over the years, which is now continued by Sahil. I interact with many peers across the industry but find it challenging to identify a workplace where employees are as genuinely appreciated and motivated as they are at Unique Group.

The company believes that when employees feel valued, they are more motivated to contribute to the overall success of the business. The passion employees display for the company’s mission and offerings is contributing to its well-being and growth. This is particularly evident at UG, where many loyal employees have remained part of the family for over 15 to 20 years, thereby testifying to the UG’s exceptional people culture.

“I remained at GSE until 2016 when the company was acquired by UG. Fortunately, all staff members were retained and almost all of us continue to work together even to this day. At UG, I became a part of a global team involved not only with Hydrographic/Oceanographic equipment but also with large-scale ROV mount survey spreads. Today, I take pride in my role as the Survey Base Manager at UG Aberdeen, overseeing the workshop and managing various aspects, from project-specific equipment testing to procurement.”

Tell us a little about yourself and your journey with UG.
After earning my degree in AI + Robotics, my journey kicked off in 2005 as a Trainee Survey Equipment Engineer at a small company in Aberdeen called GSE Rentals. There, I honed my engineering skills, delving into the intricacies of the survey industry alongside a seasoned team with expertise not only in onshore services but also in real-life offshore applications.

My association with GSE lasted until 2016, where I proudly served as a Senior Survey Engineer. Following GSE’s acquisition by Unique Group, our team seamlessly transitioned into a global powerhouse. Together, we tackled diverse projects spanning Hydrographic and Oceanographic gear to large-scale ROV mount survey spreads. Today, I take pride in my role as the Survey Base Manager at UG Aberdeen, overseeing the workshop and managing various aspects, from project-specific equipment testing to procurement. Exciting times in the world of surveys and beyond!

What do you believe are the key factors that have contributed to the company’s longevity and success?
Continued recruitment and development of skilled, motivated personnel, coupled with substantial investments in cutting-edge technology, stand as pivotal factors behind the company’s success. At UG, our commitment to expansion and diversification has always been balanced with a focus on maintaining quality in our products and solutions. The ability to retain the core technical personnel, both in Aberdeen and globally, has played a crucial role in propelling the company to new heights.

The engineers, with expertise ranging from 5 to 35 years, bring invaluable knowledge of niche equipment and industry-specific nuances. The closely-knit team also enjoys a personal familiarity that adds an advantage. As such, there exists a level of confidence that any challenge arising during a project’s lifecycle can be effectively resolved. This has also become a cornerstone of our success story.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of working with the company for such an extended period?
The most rewarding aspect has been the establishment of strong working relationships with both team members and suppliers, enabling us to respond swiftly and efficiently when needed.

What advice would you give to new employees or those starting their careers in this company?
To new employees, embrace the opportunity to acquire knowledge and insights from each colleague and division you work with. UG supports individual growth and diversification for those who show the drive and attitude to excel. No one is confined to a specific role, and the organization promotes forward-thinking and encourages diverse perspectives across all divisions.

What is the most memorable achievement or project you’ve been a part of during your time with the company?
What stands out as my most memorable achievement is working with a motivated and rewarded team, ultimately leading to an enhanced quality of service for our customers.

Over the course of my 15-year journey with the company, my most significant accomplishment has been my progression from a helper to a role in Purchase and Estimation. The most rewarding aspect of my extended tenure here has been witnessing the evolution and growth of both the company and its people.
